RE: Problems with Montana RV

If I were a newb looking to buy a 5th wheel and I read any of these RV forums looking to find a quality rig I think Id end up giving up and staying in hotels. The basic feeling you get is theyre all junk. Fact of the matter is one needs to guage their tolerance for build quality issues when compared to standards of the general non RVing public. If youre a picky person, odds are RVing is going to test your nerves.

RE: This seem normal for 13.5K A/C in 5er?

Our 13.5K btu ac for our 30' 5er has always kept the temps great in 90F+. We've been to Myrtle beach 3 times at the end of August when it has been very hot and humid and the ac simply cycles on and off maintaining the trailer in the 70-72F range.
Thats outstanding, almost unheard of! we've been to myrtle a number of times in august with 2 different 5th wheels, never had a rig with one a/c unit that kept it much cooler than 80, unless we got lucky with a site that had a couple trees for shade.

RE: Burglarized

We park ours at home and it was burglarized last october right in our driveway. The thiefs did us a favor and stole the cheapo home theatre but then came thru one of our houses windows and ransacked our home. Dumb punks stole my wifes cellphone and used it to call for a ride so now their doing 5-7 for a class b felony(they stole weapons). Anyway, too little too late we ended up installing an alarm system in our home and as a supplement to that system we leave a wireless motion detector on the kitchen table of the 5th wheel and its coded in the alarm system as its own active zone. If the door opens when its armed, our home alarm sounds and the police are called.

RE: This seem normal for 13.5K A/C in 5er?

Weve got one 15k on our 34' montana and its no where near adequate, not even close! Im adding a second low profile ac over the bedroom with its own dedicated power cord that'll be stowed in the underbelly. That way If Im at a campsite with only a 20 amp service I can still sleep in a cool bedroom. That opens up some nice wooded sites for us that were previously inaccessable.

RE: tornado rotary tank rinser

A buddy and I both installed tornado rinsers in our 5th wheels when new. They work great but last yr my buddys backflow preventer cracked and caused it to leak when flushing, he replaced it and its been fine since. Second trip out this year and mines got the same leak, I have yet to tear the underbelly off to verify but it only leaks when Im rinsing so Im certain its some sort of issue with the tornado.

RE: Heavy 5th Wheels

I dont know how many of you guys have ever seen a Royals International, but they are $200k heavy beasts! Id never think of hauling one with a HD pickup truck. The buyers of these are surely into MDT territory. I guess I look at it this way, if you can afford to buy a trailer of this caliber, you can certainly afford the right truck to pull it.

RE: Towing in Canada

About 5 years ago in quebec I saw a mid 1980's dodge colt towing 2 snowmobile trailers in tandem with 4 snowmobiles on them. Not quite the right tow vehicle..It looked like a death trap to me, but Im told it was legal.

RE: words of caution

Ive seen rubber guards for the slideout corners. I whacked my head once, that was the day we bought our 5er. The memory of the blood running down my forehead has kept me clear of it since.

RE: Cedar Creek Silverback 30 LSA

We looked at the silverback and decided to go with a Montana. Although forest river uses plywood floors its made of multiple pieces. Our previos 5th wheel was a forest river, that rig and a few we looked at when shopping for new had soggy feeling floors at the joints while the montanas have a 1 piece commercial grade osb floor with no joints and had a more solid feel. Additionaly we thought the cabinet layout, finish and overall look on the interior of the monte was nicer. Regardless, the silverback is a nice rig and if you choose one Im sure it'll offer plenty of enjoyment.

RE: Cleaning the rubber roof: Yipes

I clean it twice a year with a soft brush on a broom handle and climb the ladder on the rig to get there. By keeping it clean the black streaks on the sides throughout the year are very few.

RE: 5th wheel hitch well behind rear axle... photo

If you look the trailers not plugged in. My guess is thats a campground service truck taking a trailer to or from a site. Ive seen a number of them in different parks, in fact Ocean lakes in Myrtle Beach had one Id swear was just like the one in the photo.

RE: Stabilizers on sale - JT or Eliminator

Ive got the eliminators and they work great, not sure about build quality compared to the JT but I think theyre pretty good quality and they really stiffened up our montana.

RE: Suspension air bags

Ive had both firestone and airlift products, I prefer the firestones. Install was easy, the hardest part was getting the truck jacked up and the tires off.

RE: GAS Prices!!! I sold my rig, my F-250 is next

We had been thinking of taking a cruise later in the year or next spring. I just priced airfare for a flight from NY to Fort Lauderdale. Its somewhere near $1200 for the 2 of us...Yikes!! Plus cruise lines are raising prices and adding fuel surcharges. All that money can cover alot of fuel for short RV trips, and still let the savings grow some. Its got to get alot worse before we'll give camping trips up. Somethings got to let you get away from reality now and then.

RE: Chevy 2500HD Ride Quality

2500HD ride:
Our 2500HD 6L with towing package rides absolutely awful without at least 500-LBS of cargo in the bed!
Cheers,
Silver-
Thats an unusual response from a 3/4 truck owner. Try a Ford or Dodge.. you'll think your chevy rides like a dream.

RE: Air bag question ?

I tow the same trailer with a 2006 Chevy 2500HD Duramax crew cab. Unless I'm loading the truck heavy with extra gear and people I have no need for airbags, It tows and rides pretty nice. I did recently add firestone airbags for those trips when Ive got a truck full of people and a big aux tank of water in the box. I suggest you try it first without and see how it suits you, its my experience that F250 fords are spring stiffer than 2500HD chevys so Im betting it'll be just fine, the pin weight is reasonable. I also have a slider hitch and have never used the slide feature with this trailer.

RE: Back Up Camera

I dont use one to hook up, but have been thinking about getting one for the back of the trailer.
Costco has the same one as CW for $89 online Clicky Link They also have a different one in the store for $69.
I installed the $69.00 Costco unit just two weeks ago. Got a very clear picture. The sender and antennae don't have the range to mount the camera on the back of a TT, as the distance is is beyond the signal strength. So I mounted the camera above my license plate on my long wheelbase long bed Dodge Ram TV. I didn't use the camera until I got home from a 2,000 mile trip towing, and to my surprise, I'm getting zero picture now?
I don't know what's happened to the unit? It is wired to my reverse backup wire off my trailer hitch wire bundle, and when placing the truck in reverse I had a nice clear picture after situating my antennae from the camera just right to get good reception to my LCD monitor that plugs into a cigarette lighter socket in the cab.
I guess I'll have to go under the rear of the truck and take the tie wraps off the antennae wire and have see if somehow the antennae isn't sending a signal to the monitor in the cab. Otherwise, my $69.00 Costco unit has failed in some way. Well, I can absorb a $69.00 loss easier than some of the pricier units out there. I can't return the unit, as the packing box is gone. I don't think Costco would accept a pile of unboxed parts as a return?
Same experience here, I bought one at walmart.com, my dad bought one at costco. It didnt have the range to work on our fifth wheel so I put it on my truck and the pic was nice... for a while. After aroughly a year neither of us have working cameras.

RE: Chevy 2500HD Ride Quality

I didnt see it as belittling at all and I do agree about the ride quality, I just wanted to clarify Im not looking for a truck. Im going the airbag route, in fact my Firestone airbags were delivered at the house today. A 34' 5th wheel full of fresh water and food, a spare 40 gallons of water in the bed of the truck, 2 honda generators and 5 guys with enough beer loaded up for a 4 day nascar weekend in Richmond next week brings the 2500HD Crew Cab within an inch of the rear bumpstops, Im glad Im in the roomy drivers seat and roomy bedroom...lol. I also with you on the 4x4 option, its one of those things in life you might not need very often, but boy you sure are glad you have it when you do need it.
Now do us and yourself all a favor While going down the road, look for a closed State truck scales and run the setup across it and report back what your truck weighs and that the combination scales at.
I can do that, Im curious on the weight myself. Our local truckstop with a scale closed up before I bought this trailer.
